Surgical treatment

Robotic and manual hair transplant, when restoration is not enough

We use the ARTAS robot, the only one in Costa Rica, for large areas of the scalp, and the manual technique for small areas, beard and eyebrows. Our medical team assesses whether you are a candidate, plans the design with you and performs the procedure, under the medical direction of Dr. Irene Thuel.

Who it is and is not for

You may be a candidate if

  • You have areas with little or no hair that you want to recover.
  • Your donor area has enough good-quality hair.
  • The cause of your hair loss is diagnosed and under control.

You may not be a candidate if

  • Your donor area is not sufficient.
  • Your hair loss is active and first needs to stabilize.
  • Your case can be solved without surgery.

If a transplant is not the best option for you, we will tell you clearly and explain the alternatives.

How the ARTAS robot works

ARTAS is an image-guided robotic system that assists in selecting and extracting follicular units, one by one, from the donor area. The design planning, implantation and follow-up are performed by our medical team.

Manual transplant for small areas

Not every transplant needs the robot. For the beard, eyebrows or small areas of the scalp we perform manual transplants, extracting follicular units one by one (FUE technique). During the consultation the physician tells you which technique suits your case.

Beard

To add density or fill in patchy areas.

Eyebrows

To recover shape or density.

Small areas

Small areas of the scalp, such as scars or touch-ups.

How the process works

  • Medical consultation to confirm whether you are a candidate.
  • Design of the area to recover, discussed with you.
  • Outpatient procedure under local anesthesia.
  • Aftercare instructions and follow-up visits.
  • Treatment to protect the hair you keep, when the physician recommends it.

Risks and recovery

Like any surgical procedure, a transplant has risks and a recovery that varies from person to person. Discomfort, swelling or temporary scabs may occur, among other effects. The physician explains all the risks, aftercare and expected timelines for your case before you decide.

Patients from abroad

If you are coming from another country, we arrange a consultation and advise you on how long your visit should be and on follow-up visits.

Questions about the transplant

Do I always need a transplant?

No. Many people can be treated without surgery through a hair restoration protocol. A transplant is considered when restoration is not enough or when there are bald areas you want to recover, and always after the consultation.

Do you do beard or eyebrow transplants?

Yes. For the beard, eyebrows and small areas of the scalp we perform manual transplants using the FUE technique. The ARTAS robot is used for scalp transplants when the physician recommends it.

What is the ARTAS robot?

It is an image-guided robotic system that assists in selecting and extracting follicular units during the transplant. The design planning and implantation are performed by the medical team. La Clínica del Pelo has the only ARTAS robot in Costa Rica.

Does the treatment hurt?

It depends on the procedure. Some techniques may cause mild discomfort, and local anesthesia is used for transplants. During the consultation, the physician explains what you will feel, the aftercare and the possible effects of each option.

Do you see patients from outside San José or from abroad?

Yes. We see patients from all over the country and from abroad. Message us on WhatsApp to arrange your consultation and, if you are coming from another country, we will advise you on how long your visit should be.
